Three people hospitalized after being rescued in the mountains in Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — It’s been a busy morning for Phoenix technical rescuers as three hikers were rescued from two different mountains Friday.

Phoenix Fire Captain Rob McDade recounts one rescue in South Mountain The story is about a mountain bike racer who suffered a lower body injury. In this incident, rescuers had to use “big wheel– technical operation using a one-wheeled stretcher – for safe descent from the mountain.

IN Piestewa Peakan adult tourist felt unwell and was unable to get down from the main trail, so he had to use a helicopter. The man was airlifted to a nearby landing zone and taken by ambulance to hospital for further treatment.

Earlier in the morning, another tourist had to be rescued from Piestewa due to a lower leg injury.

With cooler mornings and pleasant afternoon temperatures, many Valley residents choose to start their day with a hike on popular hiking trails. Phoenix fire officials and health experts continue to emphasize the importance of safe hiking.

Water, food and protection from the elements are key for even the simplest hikesbut there are a few other things to keep in mind.

Proper footwear, a first aid kit and lighting can be critical to avoiding injury; and remember about severe weather possibleespecially if you plan to hike before dawn and after dusk.
