Blue Jays battle Demons and settle for seventh-place game – Jamestown Sun

FARGO — Repeated adversaries create repeating patterns.

Unfortunately for the Jamestown High School volleyball team, those patterns didn’t translate into victory Friday night.

In the consolation semifinals of the 2024 NDHSAA state tournament, the Blue Jays lost to Bismarck High School for the fourth time this season. The Demons beat the Jays 25-22, 25-21, 25-19. The loss sends the Jays to Saturday’s seventh-place matchup against consolation semifinal losers Fargo Davis and West Fargo Horace.

Fargo Davis held a 2-0 lead over the Hawks when the Jamestown Sun went to press Friday.

Although things looked even better at first, it was the Demons who took control of the match.

Thanks in large part to the help of 5-foot-11 center Jordyn Rood, Bismarck took the lead and outscored the blue team 12-6. Jamestown gained the advantage and scored back-to-back points to make it a four-point game, but Rood’s nine kills made life difficult for the Jays.

Still, as always, the Blue Jays battled.

The Demons were four points away from finishing the first set when Marie Anderson hit one into the defensive hole, giving the Jays a sideline and herself four kills for the match. Jamestown’s late 6-1 run saved four set points, but Roode’s late kill sealed the deal for the Demons 25-22.

The Blue Jays pounced on the Demons to start the second, but Bismarck came back from a 4-2 deficit to take a 10-5 lead.

Sarah Hegerle’s team made a small run midway through the set, scoring five straight points, including an ace from Amelia Newman, a kill from Leah Trumbauer and an error from Bismarck to tie the score at 10.

But, as in the previous three meetings, the Demons retreated.

Taylor Mayer’s strike down the baseline lifted the Demons’ foothold. Brooklyn Bush sealed the win in the second set with her fourth kill of the match, but Jenson Hintz got a kill on the next play to end the Demons’ run 9-3.

The 2-0 lead was too much for the Jays to handle.

The Demons held the Jays to within four points in the third. Trumbauer temporarily stopped Bismarck by firing one across the court at set point, but Renee Biederstadt ended the match on the next stage with her team’s 43rd goal.

Bismarck had 43 kills and Jamestown had 37. Individual statistics were not available at the time the Jamestown Sun went to press.

“I think our hitters did a good job, I thought we hit some good balls, Edie made a great play, Leah (Trumbauer) played well, Lucy (Falk) was tough, Marie (Anderson) made a ton of blocks tonight— it was fun,” JHS head coach Sarah Hegerle told Jamestown 107.1 FM. “…I just want our kids to know that it’s not about winning, it’s about fighting for each other.”
