Kanguva Box Office Collection. Day 9: Fantasy thriller struggles to gross Rs 100 crore, Suriya may reportedly compensate the studio

Suriya’s Kanguva, once touted as a cinematic spectacle, has now become a cautionary tale at the box office. According to Sanikilk, the film’s 9th day earnings on November 22 fell to a meager ₹0.61 crore, down a staggering 68% from Thursday’s ₹1.9 crore.

After a long run of eight weekends, the film grossed just ₹64.30 crore, which is not even close to its whopping budget of ₹300 crore.

The financial implications are enormous. Studio Green, the production company behind the magnum opus, is reportedly suffering huge losses. In an attempt to salvage the situation, Suriya is reportedly considering taking a pay cut or even returning part of his fee. There are also rumors that he will take part in a low-budget project for Studio Green to make up for the shortfall.

Adding salt to the wound, Kanguva faced stiff competition from other Tamil films, especially Sivakarthikeyan’s Amaran, which continued to dominate the box office. Despite high production values, a star cast and a massive marketing campaign, Kanguva struggled to resonate with audiences, receiving mixed to negative reviews.

For Surya, the consequences extend beyond Kanguva. His ambitious debut Bollywood project Karna, helmed by Rakey Omprakash Mehra and planned as a two-part epic at a cost of ₹350 crore, has reportedly been shelved. Industry sources attributed the decision to financial problems caused by Kanguva’s poor performance.

Meanwhile, fans got a glimmer of hope with the announcement of the sequel to Kanguva. The sequel, slated for release in 2026, will feature Suriya’s brother Karthi as the antagonist. However, it remains to be seen whether the sequel can erase the disappointment of the original.

On the career front, Suriya is gearing up for ‘Surya 44’, directed by Karthik Subbaraj and starring Pooja Hegde, as well as ‘Surya 45’ starring RJ Balaji and backed by music maestro AR Rahman.
