Jameer Watkins scored 19 points to help Florida State eliminate Temple.

Jameer Watkins scored 19 points and Malik Ewin had 15 points to lead Florida State to a 78-69 victory over Temple on Friday night at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The Seminoles (5-1) won their second straight after losing to rival Florida and will face UMass in the return game on Sunday, while the Owls (3-2) have lost their second seed in three games. Temple next plays the University of Massachusetts on Saturday in Uncasville.

Jamal Mashburn Jr. led all scorers with 20 points, but at times Florida State’s defense did a solid job of preventing him from getting his offense going. Mashburn Jr. shot 6 of 15 from the field and 1 of 4 from 3-point range. He also shot 7 of 12 from the free throw line.

Zion Sanford had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Owls, while Steve Settle had 14 points and five rebounds.

Watkins also did most of his damage from the free throw line, shooting 10 of 13 and going 4 of 10 from the field.

Temple jumped out to a 9-2 lead but was unable to maintain the momentum thanks to Florida State’s defense. Ewin had a solid performance on that front and on the boards, grabbing nine rebounds.

Taylor Bol Bowen also had a solid defensive game with three blocks and seven points. Chandler Jackson also finished with 10 points.

Florida State finished with a slight rebounding advantage, 39-34, but controlled things in the paint, outscoring the Owls 40-30 and slowing the game to a tighter pace.

But when the Seminoles needed to make a run, they did, scoring a total of 15 fast-break points.

After Temple cut the deficit to 73-66 with 1:25 remaining on Settle’s dunk, Florida State put the game away at the free throw line when Watkins made all three of his free throws and Bol Bowen made two.

The Seminoles again distributed the ball well, with six players scoring at least seven points.
