Diani’s quick double sank Roma

Goals: Dragoni 74; Diani 77′, 79′, Le Sommer 89′, Renard 90+2′

Lyon claimed their second win over Roma in just over a week, this time by a 3–1 scoreline.

Roma built a defensive formation to contain Lyon and were successful for a long time.

The Giallorosse were pleased with Joe Montemurro’s strike on the stroke of half-time and the tactic paid off when 18-year-old Giulia Dragoni timed her run perfectly to deliver a high-class strike just 15 minutes from time.

However, the lead was short-lived as Kadidiatou Diani scored from close range from a corner after just three minutes.

Two minutes later lightning struck twice as another corner was taken into the penalty area and this time Diani hit the ball high into the net.

The victory was sealed when Eugenie Le Sommer – just 80 seconds after coming on as a substitute – fired a goal into the top corner following a delightful pass from Diani with the outside of her boot.

Experienced defender Wendie Renard then struck the fourth deep into stoppage time, sliding in a header from another Lyon corner.

These dominant few minutes ensured Lyon’s winning streak continued and they progressed to the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Chelsea on track to beat Celtic

Goals: Bronze 2′, Kaptein 25′, Perisset 90′

Chelsea put on a professional performance to beat Celtic 3–0.

Celtic shocked Chelsea last week by taking the lead against the Blues but there was no repeat this time as Lucy Bronze scored after just one minute with a superb volley from Catarina Macario’s corner.

That lead was doubled when Guro Reiten crossed from a short corner which was converted by Vike Kaptein’s header.

The Blues were awarded a penalty before stoppage time and Yves Perisse converted.

With this result, Chelsea have now reached the quarter-finals.

Popp’s hat-trick helps Wolfsburg beat Galatasaray

Goals: Popp 3′ 15′, 88′ Minge 31′, Lattwein 90+6

Alexandra Popp was the star of the night as Wolfsburg beat Galatasaray 5-0 at home.

The Turkish side enjoyed a 5-0 home win over Wolfsburg last week and the return leg continued in much the same vein as Popp pounced on a loose ball inside the area and quickly fired home.

And it was Popp who struck again 15 minutes later, this time heading into the far post from a Lynn Wilms corner.

To add insult to injury for the Turkish side, Yanina Minge scored three times when she struck a powerful shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to make it three in just over half an hour.

With two minutes left, striker Popp completed her hat-trick, rising highest and nodding in after another Wilms pass.

And the score was repeated from the previous week: Lena Lattvein’s goal came in stoppage time.

Real Madrid beat decisive Twente

Goals: Ravensbergen 29′, Te Break 90+6; Caicedo 45+2′, Bruun 71′, Redondo 90+4

Twente made Real work hard but still won 3-2 that night.

After a 7-0 rout in Madrid, it was Twente who unexpectedly took the lead on home soil.

Alike Tuin took a free kick from the right flank into the penalty area, and then, to the delight of the crowd, the ball was sent into the goal by Jamie Ravensbergen.

Real Madrid were back in the game towards the end of the break when Linda Caicedo’s wild run ended with her shot saved but the Colombian was on hand to convert the resulting shot.

Caicedo then turned provider as she sent in a dangerous cross from the right flank that Signe Bruun fired home from inside the box.

As the minutes ticked by, Twente piled on the pressure and Ravensbergen were unlucky not to equalise, but then Alba Redondo broke through the defensive line on the break and fired a shot into the back of the net.

With the final kick of the game, Sophie te Brake gave her side a consolation, but Real Madrid were simply too strong.

The result meant that Madrid were almost certainly through to the quarter-finals by the time the final whistle blew.

European matches continue tomorrow evening with Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Juventus, Arsenal and Barcelona taking part.
