A Parkwood man who doused his girlfriend with gasoline and set her on fire in a fit of jealousy has been sentenced to 22 years in prison. mang after confessing to his heinous crimes.

The heartbroken family of murder victim Deoni Way say her ex-boyfriend Joshua Phillips asked to speak to them before his sentencing in Wynberg Regional Court, where he asked for forgiveness.

The 32-year-old Pelican Park woman was last seen on Christmas Eve last year.

Her family then explained that she had gone to visit her. Sealike-like her father in Parkwood a few days before Christmas and her family lost contact with her.

On Christmas Eve, they received a call from Philip’s family and rushed to the hospital, where they were informed that Deone had suffered extensive burns after setting the fire.

Cousin Jade Baartman explained that doctors told them her lungs had collapsed and her internal organs had burned. She died a few days later in hospital when her heart stopped.

Phillips later sent his family a voice note in which he admitted to pouring gasoline on Deoney and said he also planned to set himself on fire. He surrendered to the police.

Jade says they were surprised when they arrived at court on Wednesday to be told the convicted killer wanted to speak to his family.

She explains: “The case was transferred to the regional court about three weeks ago, and in the meantime there were delays as they expected him to plead guilty.

“When I arrived, the prosecutor told me that he wanted to talk to me, and I agreed.

“He came to me and apologized for what he did. He said he was sorry and I said that as people of God we must forgive, but we believe that whatever the court’s decision, he must comply.”

Jade said that during the trial, Phillips admitted to using gasoline to start the fire at Wendy’s house. He also claimed that Deone was funny.

She adds: “He claimed she was unfaithful, but the judge said the evidence presented in court showed he was a jealous and controlling guy and even if his claims were true, he could have broken up with her rather than kill her.” her.

“The magistrate gave him 22 years and although he was prepared to receive a life sentence, he showed the court remorse.

“We are pleased with the outcome as Christmas is just around the corner and it has had an impact on the family. Deone’s loss will always be felt.”
