Dodgers sign pair of injured pitchers ahead of comeback season

For all the injuries the Dodgers suffered this season, it was easy to forget that they were also missing two big guns in Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin, whose 2024 fates were sealed a year earlier when May underwent flexor tendon surgery. and the Tommy John edit, and Gonsolin had his first Tommy John.

Both have made progress throughout the season. Gonsolin was even so close to returning that The Dodgers were considering bringing him back for the postseason.but May faced another problem when he suffered a rupture of his esophagus unrelated to baseball and had to undergo another surgery to treat it.

On Friday, non-competition deadline, May thought he might be in danger for his quick and brutal exit from the Dodgers due to how little he was actually able to accomplish in his career. His arbitration contract probably wouldn’t cost Los Angeles very much, but they could dump him to make room on the 40 man.

However, before the 5 p.m. deadline expired, the Dodgers had reportedly reached agreements with both Gonsolin and May. first for $5.4 million and the last one for $2.135 million.

The Dodgers agree to new contracts with Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May ahead of the non-tender deadline.

Both players’ salaries are the same as in 2024, which makes sense. Walker Buehler also didn’t get a promotion in 2024 when he was returning from a full year on the mound.

This is Gonsolin’s third year of arbitration eligibility, so the Dodgers will still have control of the team through 2026, and May is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the 2025 season. Next year, healthy recovery seasons are of utmost importance to both of them, but especially Maywho has never pitched more than 56 innings in his career and will need to do his best to get ahead when he does get to the market.

Anthony Banda, Gavin Lux, Alex Vecia, Brusdar Graterol, Michael Kopech and Evan Phillips have yet to agree to a deal or receive an offer, but the Dodgers have some wiggle room to keep them all with the Dodgers. There are currently only 38 players on the 40-man roster.
