Stephen Jones says the Dallas Cowboys don’t regret trading for quarterback Trey Lance.

According to Stephen Jones, Dallas Cowboys If they had the opportunity, they would trade for Trey Lance again.

The Cowboys executive vice president praised the team’s current backup quarterback during his most recent appearance was on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM). Lance he is currently expected to line up behind starter Cooper Rushwhich is said to give Dallas “the best chance to win.”

“(Lance) is a top-tier pick, a guy we had at the top. As you know, Dak (Prescott) was about to sign and we wanted to take a look at some good young talent, but we didn’t feel like we could get anywhere from a quality standpoint like we could get with Trey,” Jones said. “As it turned out, we ended up signing Dak for the long term. So obviously this reduces the need to rush to do something with Trey. In fact, it makes it more difficult because Trey, I’m sure, wants to see what happens now that we’ve made a long-term commitment to Dak. But I don’t regret it at all.”

Dallas originally acquired Lance ahead of the 2023 season. sending a 2024 fourth-round pick to San Francisco for the services of a young quarterback. Lance has yet to receive a full look at the Cowboys’ roster, having only appeared in one regular season game since joining the roster.

Lance briefly replaced Rush during the team’s 34–6 loss to Philadelphia in Week 10 going 4-of-6 through the air for 21 yards and an interception. He also rushed for 17 yards on three carries.

Jones added that the team traded Lance because it needed options as Prescott contemplated the possibilities of his playing future. Dallas considered Lance a better young player than any of the quarterbacks it could have drafted in the fourth round.

“Certainly, we just didn’t feel like we could get an option of Trey’s quality in the fourth round in a building competing for that job if for some reason Dak wasn’t going to be a Cowboy long term,” Jones said.
