OPD shared these holiday shopping safety tips:

  • Be alert: be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. If something is wrong or you notice that someone is following you, seek help immediately.

  • Limit distractions: Don’t use your phone while walking to and from your car.

  • Consider personal safety devices: Carry items like pepper spray or a loud alarm with you for added safety.

  • Shop wisely: If possible, avoid shopping after dark, early morning or late evening. If you must shop during this time, park in well-lit areas with plenty of foot traffic.

  • Protect your belongings: Lock personal items and purchases in your vehicle and keep them out of sight.

  • Be mindful of your cash: Carrying large amounts of cash can make you a target for thieves.

  • Control online deliveries. If you’re shopping online, don’t leave your delivery outside or unattended for long periods of time.
