Nigeria: Representatives recommend N500 million recapitalization of discos

The lawmakers noted that DISCOS activities in the country pose a threat to the economic stability and welfare of Nigerians.

The House of Representatives has recommended a recapitalization program of at least N500 million for all electricity distribution companies (DISCOS) in the country to keep them operational.

The recommendation followed the adoption of a motion by Ibrahim Isiaka (APC-Ogun) at the plenary meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.

While making the motion earlier, Mr. Isiaka said DISCOS activities in the country pose a threat to the economic stability and welfare of Nigerians.

He said consumers are being forced to pay for meters they previously financed, putting financial strain on households and businesses already facing economic challenges.

The lawmaker said that when essential services are used against the citizens to whom they were meant to be provided, it stifles growth and development, which amounts to economic sabotage.

“Despite ongoing regulatory oversight and Energy Committee demands for accountability from these companies, DISCOS continued to persist in operating with impunity and disregarding consumer rights.

“The actions of DISCOS pose a serious threat to the economic stability and well-being of Nigerian citizens. Injustice must be confronted and the needs and rights of voters must be prioritized,” he said.

The House of Representatives called on the Federal Ministry of Energy to declare DISCOS as non-state actors and take immediate action to address their reckless actions that threaten the country’s economy.

Lawmakers said they should step up public awareness campaigns and initiatives to inform consumers about their rights and proper channels for redressing complaints related to electric service.

In his resolution, Speaker of the House Abbas Tajudeen directed the Power Committee to investigate DISCOS with the intention of holding them accountable and protecting consumer rights.

He said the committee should examine the implementation of strict rules governing DISCOS to ensure transparency and fairness in dealing with consumers.

The Speaker directed the committee to report to the House within four weeks for further legislative action.
