MUSCADINE FARMS — Dec. 3, 2024 will mark four years since Zeb Hughes of Wesson and Gunner Palmer of Hazlehurst went duck scouting on the Mississippi River. They never returned and have still not been found.

Hughes would have been 25 this year and Palmer would have been 20. Only their boat and some hunting equipment were found. Years after their disappearance, MDWFP named the youth hunting camp the Gunner Palmer Memorial Youth Waterfowl Hunt.

Applications for camp 2025 open again until December 15th. The camp will be held February 6-9, 2024 at the Muscadine Farms Wildlife Management Area. Ducks Unlimited is helping with the program.

The mission of the camp is to attract new waterfowl hunters, increase support for wetland conservation and waterfowl hunting, and retain hunters. Young people aged 13 to 15 years are invited to participate.

Due to limited space, only 12 youth places are open. Entries will be ranked based on their content and youth will be notified if they are selected shortly after entries close.

No prior hunting experience is required, but a desire to learn about waterfowl, wetland ecology and hunting is required. Campers and staff are provided with food and accommodation.
