£2.2m major refurbishment approved for Curve

£2.2m major refurbishment approved for Curve

Leicester’s Curve Theater is set to undergo a £2.2 million renovation.

The city’s mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, approved the decision following the recommendation of a council report, and work is expected to begin later this year.

In May, an external solar shading panel broke off and fell onto Orton Square, prompting the council to cordon off the area.

The refurbishment work is expected to be completed by autumn 2025, with £1.47m coming from the existing capital improvement program budget and a further £732,000 from the sale of assets.

A cordon was placed around the building while investigations were carried out, and then fencing was erected until the work was completed.

According to the board’s report, specific studies showed that “the initial anchorage strategy failed in certain areas” when the brise Soil blade fell.

Curve has about 700 of these blades, each weighing about 330 pounds (150 kg).

The report added that work was now required to ensure the remaining blades were securely secured.

The original contractor who installed the blades went into administration in 2023, meaning the responsibility for making the decision as landlord lay with the city council.
