Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorses Sarah McBride against GOP pettiness

Imagine being so dedicated to equality and basic human rights that by age 26 you become the spokesperson for the largest LGBTQ lobbying organization. That same year, you would make history as the first transgender person to speak at the Democratic National Convention. At 31, you are the first openly transgender person in the state Senate. At 34, you break another barrier by becoming the first openly trans member of Congress.

Now imagine arriving at the US Capitol to do the job you were elected to do, only to be met with brutality from small-minded people who are more interested in humiliating others than serving their constituents. This is the reality Sarah McBride faces as she continues her groundbreaking career in public service.

For House Speaker Mike Johnson, egged on by Nancy Mace, to push a bathroom bill against McBride is simply disgusting. Each member of Congress has a private toilet. It’s not about practicality; it’s about Republicans using their power to disparage trans women and perpetuate their petty, authoritarian agenda. But Sarah McBride holds her head high and remains focused on the job she was elected to do: helping Americans.

Thank God for Sarah McBride. And thank God for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who refuses to let these attacks go unanswered. AOC calls this resolution for what it is: a crass, opportunistic ploy designed to raise funds to fight fear and discrimination.

AOC is speaking out against Nancy Mace for targeting Sarah McBride.

“They’re doing this so that Nancy Mace can… raise funds via email. They are not doing this to protect people. They put women in danger, they put girls of all kinds in danger. And everyone must reject it. This is disgusting. “

“This inevitably leaves women and girls ready to be attacked because people will want to check their private parts to suspect who is trans and who is cis and who is doing what,” AOC said. “So the idea that Nancy Mace wants little girls and women to throw food in front of who? Investigator? Who would it be?

“Because she wants to be suspicious and point the finger at those she perceives to be transgender? This disgusting

We need more leaders like AOC in the Democratic Party: passionate voices who unapologetically champion working-class values*, tell the truth to their constituents, and stand up to bullies (and who don’t rely on a team of handlers to articulate their message). .

(*Why is it that when Democrats defend the working class, it is dismissed as “marxist online leftism,” but when Republicans do the same, it is praised as moderate, neutral politics?)

This is one badass woman defending another badass woman. If we’re going to survive the next four years, we need more of this. And no, Elissa Slotkin, this isn’t about identity politics.. It is about ensuring that everyone is afforded the same dignity, especially in the workplace where they have been elected to serve alongside everyone else in the room.
