Padres predicted to lose $65 million to AL East contender

Padres predicted to lose million to AL East contender

After failing to win the World Series, the San Diego Padres may not be able to retain the free agent the team took on for the long haul.

As predicted by FanSided’s Nick VillanoSan Diego likely won’t have the financial resources to retain closer Tanner Scott this winter, with the free agent signing with the Boston Red Sox.

Last July, the Padres acquired Scott from the Miami Marlins in a six-player deal that included San Diego prospects Robbie Snelling, Adam Mazur, Jay Beshears and Graham Pauley.

Scott was named a co-leader with Robert Suarez to form an impressive one-two punch in the back of the Padres bullpen.

It was a possible “rental” deal of sorts that allowed the team to use Scott or Suarez in tight situations that didn’t arise in the final inning as San Diego sought to capture the first Major League Baseball title in the organization’s history, dating back to 1969.

However, considering Suarez has 36 saves with a 2.77 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 55 games, keeping Scott in the Padres’ brown may not be the organization’s top priority.

Spotrac Predicts Scott’s Market Value as an option for a four-year, $65.5 million contract, the figure is likely too much for San Diego to handle unless he is the team’s sole proxy.

Scott, who had 22 saves with a 1.75 ERA last season between the Marlins and Padres, would likely be more valuable to another contending team, and Villano sees that team as the Red Sox.

Boston is looking for a new player after former firefighter Kenley Jansen became a free agent and left the team before the end of the 2024 campaign.

As Villano notes, “Tanner Scott is a great replacement. Yes, he will cost the Red Sox money, and their new owners seem allergic to spending, but this team needs players to celebrate, and Scott really needs to anchor the bullpen.” it’s in motion now.”
