A LITTLE boy is fighting for his life after a car crash as his family shared an urgent plea.

A car driven by James Doherty, ran off the road and collided with four-year-old Carlos Crane and a woman in her late teens.

Doherty, 18, of no fixed address, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was charged after a collision in the Lawrence-Weston area in Bristol On November 17 shortly before 2 p.m.

Little Carlos remains hospital in critical condition, the woman suffered a leg injury and has since been discharged to continue her recovery.

The baby’s family arranged GoFundMe raising funds to pay for taxi fares to the hospital and Christmas gifts for children.

On the page, they described how they were “shocked to the core” when their world was “turned upside down.”

His parents wrote: “Our sweet four-year-old boy Carlos was recently involved in a devastating accident that left him with life-changing injuries.

“He is currently in hospital receiving intensive care and although we are doing everything we can to stay strong for him, the road ahead is long and uncertain.

“This accident turned our world upside down and shook the family to the core.”

They added: “As parents, we are experiencing the emotional challenges of supporting Carlos in his recovery while trying to keep life as stable as possible for our other children.

“The costs of traveling to the hospital every day, providing food and basic necessities for families are rising rapidly.

“WITH Christmas around the corner and everyone will be out of work due to this tragic event, we are worried that our children will not get the Christmas they deserve.”

In a matter of days, more than £4,000 of the £5,000 target was raised for the young man after more than 200 donations were made.

After the collision, Doherty fled the scene but was arrested police later Sunday afternoon.

Police said he appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court. Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

David Paniccia Brown, serious collision investigator, said: “Doherty’s driving was completely reckless and resulted in a very young boy being taken to hospital with incredibly serious injuries.

“His decision to drive in a manner that put lives at risk and his decision to flee immediately after the collision in an attempt to avoid the consequences of his actions rather than try to help were cowardly.

“Our thoughts remain with the boy’s family, who are keeping abreast of developments and continue to receive support from specially trained officers.

“I would like to thank all the officers involved to ensure we were able to quickly present a strong case in court and secure a conviction.”

Doherty was remanded in custody ahead of a sentencing hearing at Bristol Crown Court on December 17.

Avon and Somerset Police said the incident has caused concern among the Lawrence Weston community.

Officers have carried out additional patrols in the area since Sunday.
