Thanksgiving 2024: Will Thanksgiving Dinner Cost Less This Year? Here’s what the data shows

AUDUBON, PA — As Thanksgiving approaches, grocery stores will be filled with Americans purchasing everything for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

And a pleasant surprise awaits them: a reduction in prices for a number of goods.

“I’m shopping for Thanksgiving,” said Valerie Giovinazzi of East Norriton.

Giovinazzi holds a shopping list at Redner’s Fresh Market in Audubon, Pennsylvania.

“I still need cookies, I have sweet potatoes,” said Giovinazzi, who cooks for a family of 10.

“Typically at this time of year, you need about $54 to feed a family of 10,” said Eric White, director of marketing and communications for Redner’s. “You can buy canned yams and canned vegetables for 88 cents each.”

Redner’s, like many grocery stores, is running a promotion for Thanksgiving.

“If you spend $400 in our store on any item, you are eligible to receive a free Jennie-O frozen turkey up to 20 pounds,” White said. “Inflation in the grocery industry is a big problem right now. Manufacturers are really trying to reboot.”

6abc’s data journalism team has discovered that prices have dropped on some holiday items. Prices for raw poultry, including turkey, fell 3.9% compared to the same period last year. Potatoes fell in price by 1.5%, butter and margarine rose in price by 2.1%.

However, some shoppers say they will spend whatever they need to get everything they need for their vacation.

“I feel like we never cut costs. I actually have two free turkeys this year and I’m trying to find someone to give them to,” said Leslie Pezzano of Collegeville, Pennsylvania.

Here’s a good tip if you’re trying to save money.

“Store brands, value brands sometimes replace national brands. You get the same good quality from our everyday essentials or our Redners brand as you do from a national brand, and they’re often made by the same brand. manufacturer,” White said.

White expects Redner’s to be busy this weekend, but adds that if you can get to the store later in the morning or afternoon, the lines may be shorter before Thanksgiving.
