Police carried out an emergency helicopter rescue after a man was spotted clinging to a rock above a beach in California.

The man, who has not been named, was seen clinging to a rock and screaming for help over Baker Beach, a popular hiking spot in San Franciscojust before 1 p.m. Sunday, officials said.

According to Fox Weather, the San Francisco Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol were alerted to the incident after a passerby saw the man and called 911.

Footage of the incident shows the man stuck on a cliff high above the beach as a helicopter approaches.

A Highway Patrol officer hanging from a rope attached to the helicopter lifted the man off the cliff before the couple could get away. returned safely on the ground on the beach.

It is unclear how the man got stuck on the rock in the first place.
