The Cubs’ trade proposal would take the two-time All-Star to the Yankees in place of Anthony Rizzo.

The Chicago Cubs missed the postseason in 2024. If they want to be aggressive in free agency, they may have to give up some expensive contracts.

FanSided’s Zach Pressnell proposed this trade that cuts ties with Cody Bellinger and sends him to the New York Yankees:

  • The Cubs get: right-hander Marcus Stroman, left-handed pitcher Brock Selvage and right-handed pitcher Tristan Vrieling.
  • Yankees receive: outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger

“Bellinger in pinstripes would be perfect. First of all, he would be a great backup plan for Soto if the Yankees are unable to re-sign their superstar. But even if the Yankees sign Soto, Bellinger would be a huge addition,” Pressnell wrote. . “Why? Because of his ability to play first base. The Yankees recently allowed Anthony Rizzo to hit free agency, leaving a huge hole at first base. Acquiring Bellinger would give Aaron Boone an everyday first baseman while doubling as a fourth outfielder.”

Bellinger signed a three-year, $80 million deal with the Cubs last offseason. The deal included player options after the 2024 and 2025 seasons. He opted for a 2025 contract, meaning the Cubs will pay him $27.5 million in 2025. Bellinger could leave after the season, and then the Cubs wouldn’t get anything from him.

Bellinger will clearly be an offensive upgrade over Anthony Rizzo in 2024. Bellinger slashed .266/.325/.426 in 130 games last season. He hit 18 home runs and collected 78 RBIs. Rizzo hit just .228 with eight home runs last season. The Yankees will get an offensive asset despite the expensive contract.

Defensively, Bellinger made 343 career appearances at first base.
