Two fishermen missing after boat collided with Indian Navy submarine

Two fishermen are missing after their boat collided with an Indian Navy submarine late Thursday night, 70 nautical miles off the Goa coast. There were 13 fishermen on board the boat, 11 of whom were rescued, the Navy said on Friday, adding that search operations were ongoing for the remaining members of the vessel.

“The Indian fishing vessel Marthoma, with a crew of 13, reportedly collided with an Indian Navy unit about 70 nautical miles northwest of Goa on November 21,” an Indian Navy spokesman said.

“Search and rescue operations were immediately launched by the Indian Navy using six ships and aircraft. Eleven crew members have been rescued so far,” he said.

The search operation to locate the two missing crew members is ongoing and is being coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC), Mumbai. The Navy has ordered a high-level investigation into the matter.

A Navy spokesman said additional forces, including the Coast Guard, are being mobilized and deployed to the incident area to assist in rescue efforts. The navy deployed six ships and surveillance aircraft in the rescue operation.

The fishing vessel collided with a Scorpion-class submarine, which is an important part of the Indian Navy and is capable of performing a wide range of functions, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and surveillance.

It has superior stealth skills and low noise levels, making it a deadly and accurate weapon.
