Library by Mail program delivers books to Oregon visitors stuck at home

Eligible Oregonians can now check out library books and some materials from the comfort of their home, thanks to a new program announced by the Oregon Public Library.

Library by mailThe initiative allows homebound visitors to purchase books and materials that are then delivered straight to their doors. The program is designed to ensure that mobility issues do not limit access to library services.

“Access is an important element of the library’s mission; Mobility issues should not prevent anyone from using their local library,” Library Director Greg Williams said in a press release. “This will help remove that barrier.”

To participate, visitors must fill out an application form online or by phone. Library staff will review the application and contact the applicant, who will be able to select the materials they want delivered either online or by telephone. Approved patrons will receive their library supplies every two weeks in a black canvas bag that includes a prepaid return label and instructions for returning items.

“We’ve done some pretty deep work with the Postal Service to pay for this service, and we have money set aside in the budget to provide this service,” said Helen Juarez, circulation coordinator for the Oregon City Public Library. “It helps that we recently received a generous donation from the Oregon City Women’s Club.”

In a press release, Williams said that whether a client is temporarily bedridden or permanently homebound, “we can still provide books and other resources through this program.”

Participants must have a LINCC (Clackamas County Libraries) library card and live in the Oregon City Public Library service area. Borrowing materials from other libraries, book sets, and non-book items such as tools or electronics are not eligible for the program.
