The power company wants to remind hunters to check the heating system in their cabins to ensure safety.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – Safety comes first for a power company that warns hunters about carbon monoxide buildup as they head into the cabin.

As Wisconsinites follow a popular tradition, a representative from WEC Energy Group, or we Energy, recommends checking your cabin heating system.

“It could be months since the last visit to the cabin,” Matt Cullen said. The danger of carbon monoxide can be greater if you are not prepared.

It is recommended to use a working carbon monoxide detector and perform a safety check.

“And we understand that some hunters may choose to use a portable power generator in their hunting lodge. If they choose to do this, be sure to use the portable generator outdoors in a well-ventilated area to prevent carbon monoxide from entering the hunting lodge and accumulating indoors,” Cullen said.

The gas is difficult to detect with human senses. Cullen also recommends keeping a close eye on symptoms.

“These include dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, cherry red lips or loss of consciousness. If you begin to notice these symptoms occurring in you or someone in your group, take the person to fresh air and then immediately call 911 to get medical help,” Cullen said.

On average, 500 Wisconsinites suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the state.
