Police said the incident occurred near Tau Devilal Park between 2:30 and 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

The victim, identified as Dhruv Vats, was a lawyer residing in Dundahera, Sector 21. He was returning from Chandigarh, where he was appearing before the Punjab and Haryana high court for the hearing of a case.

“The errant truck was left parked on the road with no indicators, lights, reflectors or warning signs on the rear. Apparently, Vats was unable to notice him in time due to poor visibility and fog, which caused the accident,” said a police officer investigating the case.

The officer said preliminary evidence suggests Vats tried to swerve at the last moment to avoid hitting the truck, but the vehicle still crashed into the rear of the vehicle.

“He was critically injured and passengers alerted the police control room as well as his family using his mobile phone. They also called an ambulance which took him to the Sector 10A Civil Hospital where doctors tried to treat him but he soon succumbed to severe injuries to his head and chest,” he said.

Bijender Singh, officer-in-charge of Palam Vihar police station, said that by the time the police team reached the spot, Vats was rushed to the hospital. “The police arrived at the hospital and found him dead. Later, the car and truck were stopped from the spot and taken away to clear the lane for traffic,” he said.

“The truck was accidentally left parked on the main road. The situation was further aggravated by poor visibility caused by pollution and fog,” he said, adding that they were trying to track down the truck driver and arrest him.

Based on a complaint by Harkesh Vats, father of the deceased, an FIR under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving or riding on public roads) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act was registered against the unidentified driver at Palam Vihar police station. on Wednesday.
