Outrage as City of Johannesburg councilors get pay rise

JOHANNESBURG — The City of Johannesburg Council has approved a 3% salary increase for councilors and an R83 701 increase for city mayor Dada Morero.

Increase in salaries for deputies

According to IOLthe council met on November 21, 2024 to decide on salary increase for advisors. Morero will earn R1,585,052, the Speaker just over R1.2 million, councilors R1.2 million and part-time councilors R593,610.

Opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance and the Freedom Front Plus, rejected proposed salary increase in a debate in which 146 of the 249 council members voted in favor of the increase. They believed the move would harm the city’s finances. Patriotic Alliance and ActionSA agreed to the proposed salary increase.

Dada Morero apologized for JMPD proposal

In the corresponding article Brief news reported that Dada Morero apologized for suggesting that the Johannesburg Metro Police Department hire foreigners.
