How to Treat TMJ Naturally

ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) – TMJ disorders can cause pain in the jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement. The exact cause of TMJ disorder is often difficult to determine. It affects up to 33 million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Ivanhoe explains the dangers of TMJ surgery and some natural treatments to consider first.

If you hear a pop or click when you open your jaw. This is a symptom of TMJ disorder: for every man with TMJ, nine women suffer from it.

“Unfortunately, this issue is not addressed as often as it should be, but it is a serious problem,” said Ray Becker, DDS, FAGD, a cosmetic and restorative dentist at Howard County Smiles.

Dr. Becker warns that sometimes TMJ surgery leads to problems such as facial nerve injury, limited movement, or Frey’s syndrome, a rare complication that causes abnormal facial sweating.

“Some have not seen a dentist and have serious problems, some have had many dental procedures and have serious problems,” Becker said.

So, what are the natural ways to treat TMJ? Eat soft stews, smoothies, soups and steamed vegetables to reduce joint pain and swelling. Adding omega-3 fatty acids can fight inflammation and improve circulation.

“There can be a psychological component to justice… stress,” Dr. Becker said.

Simple self-care routines like deep breathing, meditation and yoga can help you sleep better. Or apply a hot or cold compress to your jaw for 15 to 20 minutes. Ice helps reduce swelling and pain, while heat increases blood flow and relaxes the jaw muscles. If pain or discomfort persists, contact your dentist for advice.

Another natural way is to elongate your jaw. One way to do this is to place your tongue on the roof of your mouth, hold your mouth open for six seconds, and then repeat six times, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
