Amid Sixers soap opera, Eagles win seventh in a row

Amid Sixers soap opera, Eagles win seventh in a row

We’re taking a break from our daily Sixers melodrama to remind you that the Eagles will get their seventh straight win over the Rams in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

The Eagles are 8-2, while the middling Rams are 5-5 and have been outscored 239-213 by their opponents so far. That’s what the Los Angeles players say respectful things going into this one.

“They have a good receiving corps, a fantastic running back, a good moving quarterback,” Rams cornerback Quentin Lake said. “So understanding that, we can have (Jalen Hurts) play quarterback, be able to limit his use of his legs where he can’t make those off-the-cuff throws, and at the same time make sure we get pressure.”

There’s another story about the Rams defense, and it’s encouraging. Former Imhotep Charter star Omar Speights has moved up to the starting linebacker role after making the team as a rookie free agent. Six years ago, his mother, Patricia Reichner, sent her high school senior to Oregon to escape gun violence in Philadelphia. Reichner will be at the game on Sunday to watch Speights play. his hometown team.

Let’s get back to the Sixers melodrama…

Heading into the three-game road trip they just concluded, they looked like they couldn’t fall again. However, they somehow managed to dig deeper into their hole to start the season. The Sixers lost to Orlando, Miami and Memphis and finished 2-12, which was good for the team. last in the Eastern Conference.

Adding insult to injury, they learned that Paul George had suffered another bone bruise and would miss at least two games as he recovered from a left knee injury. All this prompted The Inquirer’s Keith Pompey to ask: Is it time to panic?

At this point, there is only one solution: lean more toward the two-man play between Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, which was the winning formula for the Sixers last season. The Inquirer’s Gina Mizell spoke with both players about their relationship. vaunted screen and roll.

Receiver/punt returner Britannia Covey spent the last two months on injured reserve and was so excited to return to practice that he tried to block Brandon Graham. Short Covey didn’t like it very much, “but it was still fun,” he says. “I just missed the competition.”

Covey has recovered from a broken scapula and could be available for the game against the Rams. At 5-foot-8 and 173 pounds, he needs to remember to avoid contact whenever possible: “I might have to run out of bounds a couple more times,” he said. “I probably shouldn’t try to run people over.”

Rookie Matvey Michkov brought immediate offense to the Flyers with six goals and nine assists in 18 games, but coach John Tortorella wasn’t always impressed with some other aspects of his game. On top of this there is a language barrier with a 19 year old Russian. On Wednesday’s TNT telecast, Tortorella discussed the difficulties of coaching a player who doesn’t speak English and how he and The Flyers are working on it.

Another thing to work on: Some of the chronic mistakes made earlier in the season have crept in. back to the Flyers game.

Shortly after the minor league season ended this fall, Justin Crawford, PhyllisThe No. 3 prospect found himself back on the diamond at Team USA’s training camp in Arizona. Crawford was one of 28 players selected to represent the United States at the Premier12 tournament, a championship featuring the top 12 national teams. Selected by the Phillies in the first round of the 2022 draft, Crawford was able to parlay the success of his late-season promotion into success on the international stage. Playing alongside other top prospects as well as MLB veterans, the 20-year-old outfielder helped his country earn a ticket to the Super Round in Tokyo, which opened play Thursday with a 9-1 loss to No. 1 Japan. In six games, Crawford is hitting .333 with three doubles and a homer. and make a childhood dream come true.

St. Joseph’s (19-3) will play today in the NCAA field hockey semifinals in Ann Arbor, Michigan, against heavyweight: two-time defending champion North Carolina (20-0). But the Hawks will never die, right? “We put all that aside,” coach Hannah Prince said. “We have a ton of self-belief, and We’re just really excited.”

Meanwhile, at Villanova, the women’s basketball team looks like this “Big Five” class.

If the early return is any indication, the rookie guard tandem of Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean could have a big impact on the fortunes of the franchise. The Inquirer’s Jeff McLane profiles the Birds’ promising defensive duo – plus he goes into the weight room to highlight the area where second-stringer Kenny Gainwell beat Saquon Barkley. What are you talking about the Sixers?

We asked you: What would you tell this Sixers team if you were their coach? Among your answers:

YesYou are overpaid professionals. Come, take it seriously and play hard. — William D.

What would I tell this team if I were the coach? Joel, clean out your locker. You’re fired. Sue us for the remainder of your contract. — Bill M.

As of today, I’m resigning so I don’t have to coach a bunch of dysfunctional millionaires. — Skip B.

I’m not sure if John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski, Red Auerbach, Alex Hannum, Bill Russell, KC Jones, Billy Cunningham or Phil Jackson had talked to the Sixers that it would have done any good. It hurts to say this, but I think this new Process is heading in the same place as the first Process. It’s also a shame for guys like Maxey, McCain and others who give it their all every night. — Everett S.
