Glasgow voted best location to film Hollywood blockbuster starring Glen Powell

Glasgow has been named the “best location” to film a Hollywood blockbuster starring Glen Powell, according to a location manager.

Film crews and rusty cars take to the streets as the reimagining of the 1987 cult classic The Running Man, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is filmed in the city.

Based on the Stephen King novel, the film is set in a dystopian America and follows falsely convicted cop Ben Richards, who is forced to participate in a deadly television show.

A number of sites in Glasgow were used to simulate the streets of New York.

Large film crews were seen in Renfrew Street, St Vincent Street and outside the Armadillo Hotel in Glasgow.

Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell stars in the Edgar Wright-directed film, with Josh Brolin and Katie O’Brien also set to star.

Supervising location manager Eugene Strange said: “We looked at many cities across the UK to double the number of American cities, but Glasgow is by far the best place to double.

“It has a variety of architecture: modern, classical and brutalist. We used all three styles to make Glasgow look like New York, Boston and maybe Detroit.”

The action film will be released worldwide in November 2025.
