WhatsApp may soon solve one of the biggest problems users have with 'Business Accounts'

whatsapp is reportedly testing a feature that will allow users to combat the growing problem of spam in business messages on its platform. The upcoming feature will allow users to provide feedback to companies on the types of messages they want to receive.

What’s changing

Currently, users can only choose between receiving all messages from the company or blocking them completely. This means that users will have to miss all messages – be it important order updates or marketing messages.
According to a TechCrunch report, WhatsApp users will soon be given options including interested/not interested and stop/resume buttons for certain categories of messages, which were only present on the backend.
These categories include marketing (offers, new products), utilities (order updates, account balances), authentication (one-time passwords), and service (customer requests). The report states that these categories will give users the ability to stop one or more types of messages while still receiving the messages they want.

What will this give to users?

For example, you want to receive notifications about your order, but you don’t want to receive messages related to offers. Meta reportedly said it will begin testing these variants/interactions around the world.
“We’re starting to think about how we can give users more preferences to express more granularity,” Nikila Srinivasan, vice president of product management for message monetization at Meta, told the publication during a September interview.
“One important thing we do is provide you with transparency that you are interacting and collaborating with the business. Secondly, if you don’t want to interact with them, the strongest signal you can send is to block them and report them. This helps us understand that this is not the business you want on the platform,” she said.
The company has already taken steps to limit the number of marketing messages that users receive daily. However, these new controls give users more direct and personalized control over their messaging preferences.
This update is especially important for countries like India and Brazil where WhatsApp is the main communication channel. Unlike email, which offers an unsubscribe option, WhatsApp lacked clear mechanisms for managing business messages, leading to an influx of spam.
