Fiyero has a strong connection to The Wizard of Oz after Wicked.

Fiyero has a strong connection to The Wizard of Oz after Wicked.

Ding dong, it’s a witch – wait, no, it’s not her! Wicked isn’t exactly like The Wizard of Oz, but Prince Fiyero may be more related to both than you first thought.

Be it epic lead timenew songs or reassuring us that “The Wicked Witch of the West” was actually a tasty thing, “Wicked” is truly a different story.

This is not only a fresh take on The Wizard of Oz, but also live action adaptation also differs slightly from its own source material (Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel of the same name).

We know where this will lead to Glinda and Elphaba, but what about Fiyero? We delved into how it relates to both films, not just Wicked. Warning: spoilers ahead!

Is Fiyero the Scarecrow in Wicked?

In the musical version of Wicked Fiyero truly becomes the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz.. It’s worth noting that this is technically not canon.

Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz

It’s also worth noting that we haven’t seen this in Wicked Part 1 yet. Instead, it will be a key part of the storyline in Wicked Part 1. Evil part 2.

When we return to the original musical after Defying Gravity, Prince Fiyero is now leading the guards to kill Elphaba. However, that wasn’t actually the case – he had positioned himself to try and find her after her impressive flight into the sky. Fiyero and Glinda are officially a couple.

Without spoiling what happened before (there’s another direct connection to The Wizard of Oz through a separate character), Fiyero catches Elphaba but allows her to escape. As penance, Fiyero is captured and sent to the fields outside of Monkinland to be interrogated about Elphaba’s whereabouts.

To save him from pain, we see Elphaba cast the Grimmery spell during No Good Deed… but it goes wrong.

The words sound like this: “Let not his flesh be torn. Let his blood leave no stain. Even though they beat him, let him not feel pain. May his bones never break, and no matter how they try to destroy him, may he never die.”

This is what leads to Fiyero turning into the Scarecrow. We could argue that his classic song “If I Had a Brain” is a result of him not being able to tell where Elphaba is.

Of course, we later see the Scarecrow accompanying Dorothy on her journey down the yellow brick road. We learn more about why this is a little strange later, but it confirms that Grimmery’s magic is somehow broken.

We already saw this when Elphaba tried to give herself wings at the end of Part 1, and the flying monkeys didn’t do a very good job either.

Is it the same in the novel?

Oddly enough, not at all. Elphaba and Fiyero’s journeys are completely different, although they remain romantically linked.

Fiyero and Glinda in Wicked

In the book’s second theoretical act, Fiyero is married and has three children. Elphaba begins an affair with him, which gets him quickly arrested when he is caught at her hideout. Events do not pick up until seven years later, mainly because Elphaba was hiding in the monastery.

Elphaba approaches the Fiyero family with their son Liir in hopes of gaining their forgiveness. They let her stay, but his wife Sarima – we don’t see her at all in the musical – doesn’t like it. This is where Elphaba begins her study of the sources.

This is where the plot gets similar. After this, we see Elphaba approaching Nessarose and Munchkinland along with the arrival of Dorothy and Toto.

However, in this version, Fiyero actually dies and the Wizard kills his entire family except for his daughter Nor (who is now his slave). Elphaba also dies after Dorothy initially comes to apologize for killing Nessarose, but dumps a bucket of water on her when Elphaba accidentally sets herself on fire.

If you’ve seen the musical, you’ll understand how different much of the story actually is.

Fiyero and Elphaba’s relationship explained

Wicked Part 1 explores the unspoken connection between Fiyero and Elphaba. which begins shortly after he enters Shiz University.

Elphaba touches Fiyero's face in Wicked

When he first arrives, Fiyero heads towards Glinda, who seems to be more in tune with his typical showmanship and ignorance. Although they hit it off, his attention soon became focused on Elphaba.

This goes to the next level when Dr. Dillamond is arrested in class after animals are no longer allowed to teach. A human substitute enters, demonstrating to the lion cub why animals should be seen and not heard.

Outraged, Elphaba sends the entire class to bed so she can save the cub – everyone except Fiyero. Together they successfully free him, but have a deeper conversation in the process. For the first time, Fiyero is shown as he really is… alone. As they are about to kiss, Fiyero apologizes and returns to campus.

Here we see Elphaba singing “I’m Not That Girl”, knowing that she will lose Fiyero to Glinda because they are both “perfect”.

After Glinda and Elphaba travel to the Emerald City, we don’t see Fiyero again until the end of the first part.

How does this change The Wizard of Oz?

At first glance, this doesn’t change anything. However, this calls into question why Fiyero decided to follow Dorothy in the first place.

The cast of

In the 1939 film, we are told that the Scarecrow joined Dorothy because he asked the Wizard for a brain. But could this be true in Wicked?

It’s unclear how much damage Elphaba Fiyero’s spell did, but if you know how Wicked ends, you’ll know it can’t happen. What many.

Given what we know, there is a much more likely reason why he followed Dorothy. Scarecrow wants to get as close to Elphaba as possible, and traveling with the notorious group of misfits is the least visible way to do it.

In the musical version, Fiyero is determined to do whatever it takes to reunite with Elphaba safely, so it makes sense that even the Scarecrow’s absence won’t stop him. Once he is in front of the Wizard, he can help destroy him from the inside.
