Direct Transition to NYU Grossman School of Medicine Residency

Direct Transition to NYU Grossman School of Medicine Residency

Traditionally, students spend most of their fourth year of medical school taking electives to determine which residency to enter and then applying to residency. The three-year MD degree course at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is designed to provide students who have already decided on a career path with accelerated access to a variety of medical specialties.

If you are a candidate for admission to NYU Grossman School of Medicine, you can apply to the three-year MD track when you apply to the MD program. You can also sign up for a three-year course just before finishing your second or third year of medical school. Accepted students transfer directly to any of the following twenty-one residencies:

Once you meet the academic and professional standards for medical school graduation, you will be eligible for the NYU Grossman School of Medicine residency program through the National Resident Matching Program.®. If you decide to evaluate us, you may be able to obtain a residency position at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

To apply to the three-year program, a supplemental application with essays explaining your choice of a specific residency is required. Residency program directors review submissions and decide which candidates to interview. You will be notified of your consent as soon as possible.

Although you do not begin your residency until your third year of training, you gain early access to potential mentors through rotations and electives in your chosen specialty. This eases your transition from undergraduate medical school to graduate school.

You must meet academic and professional standards and participate in National Resident Matching Program to complete your placement in a specific residency program.

Changing your place of residence and applying for external programs

If your career interests change during medical school, our flexible curriculum can accommodate your priorities. If positions in the residency program you would like to transfer to are still available, you can make the change and remain in the three-year MD program. If not, you can complete our MD training program over the traditional four-year period.

As a three-year MD student, you begin residency training at the NYU Langone Health residency program of your choice after participating in The Match®. Additionally, you can interview and evaluate residency programs at other schools.
